FILM SCORING MECCA | Series introduction
Welcome to FILM SCORING MECCA – a series tailored and curated by composer Adriano Aponte for FST. Presenting exclusive and insightful articles written by professionals working at top level in the film music industry. Today we have the pleasure to introduce the series with some words from its Editor.
CAREER PATH
Defining your career path, your way to the so-called success is quite a challenge especially in this modern era where possibilities seem to be endless. There is no single route that will work for everyone and your primarily job is to find THE way that works for YOU.
Find THE way that works for YOU
NETWORKING
During the years I discovered that one of the most if not the most important thing is NETWORKING. This magic word has thousands of facets – it can be an old school friend, a family friend, and your hairdresser, literally anyone not necessarily in the music industry. Many times music industry members live in the shadow and their job is unknown to the most. Therefore, speaking about your work and the role you have in the music industry can open doors you would never have imagined. This behaviour can lead you to connect with people through other people that are not in the music industry themselves but happen to have a friend who, in fact, is. So, I would say spread the word – you are a professional in the music industry.
Spread the word – you are a professional in the music industry
Once you reach the “right” people, connecting with them is a great way to expose yourself to the business and let them know that you are there, ready to work at your best. Meeting new folks and participating in networking events is certainly the right attitude that might lead to new unexplored opportunities. I see most successful people, the ones that “made it”, have built a great deal of connections during the years, grabbing every opportunity to interact with new colleagues. This process may result in narrowing down the networking to people who you will eventually work with/for.
LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS
I am a strong believer in communication and experience sharing. This idea met perfectly with the great opportunity to be editor at Film Scoring Tips and curate the FILM SCORING MECCA series. Some of the most extraordinary members of the film music industry have shared their immense knowledge and experience. Listening to their words has been a great inspiration for me and helped me to gather many useful information and anecdotes so to better understand the film music industry outside my studio walls. I truly hope this series can be of the same inspiration for the readers. In the end we always “learn from the masters”.
